The Ormerods of Gambleside

Notes

George Ormerod

of Hoyledean

In 1665 according to the Court Roll George's father, Lawrence, settledon George land in Wolfenden - which later turns out to be Hoyledean -provided George paid £30 to such persons as were nominated inLawrence's last will.
This settlement probably arose because in that year George marriedAlice Bridge and because Lawrence his father thought he himself mightdie.

Immediately after the death of George Ormerod Alice, his widow, andLawrence, her son, sold the Hoyledean land for £157.
They are then described as "of Tunstead".

Buried on 8 March 1687.

Alice Bridge

of Hoyledean

Immediately after the death of George Ormerod, her husband, Alice andLawrence, her son, sold the Hoyledean land for £157.
They are then described as "of Tunstead".

Buried on 12 December 1716.

Alice Ormerod

Died unmarried.

John Ormerod

Baptised in 1678.
Buried with his brother, Peter, on 31 May 1683.

Peter Ormerod

Baptised in 1681.
Buried with his brother, John, on 31 May 1683.

Peter Ormerod

of Newchurch.

In 1670, when Peter would have been 18, his father rented an"officium" (workshop or outbuilding) in the nascent village ofNewchurch.
Later, Peter also acquired a house in Newchurch.

It is likely that Peter was involved in the cloth trade, as his sonsare known to have been clothiers.
Peter and Elizabeth also had the rent from Elizabeth's land atGambleside to live off.

Peter made over the house in Newchurch to his son, Lawrence (7L3), buthe failed to appear in court to claim it.

Baptised on 21 December 1652.
Buried on 9 December 1680.
Probably died of TB, as was also probable for his brothers, John andLawrence, who both died young and unmarried.

Elizabeth Ormerod

Buried on 10 March 1700/01.

Third daughter and coheiress of George (9J1) of Gambleside.
Brought a fifth of this George's land to her marriage with PeterOrmerod.

Less than two years after Peter's death she married Richard Ormerod(7W1) of Cowpe.

Richard seems to have been a slippery character for on 5 August 1682the Court Roll records that Elizabeth Ormerod of Newchurch, widow, bySamuel Mills of Cowpe (a neighbour of Richard's) surrendered land inGambleside of y.r. 6/8d, i.e. almost all her inheritance, to the useand behoof or Richard Ormerod of Cowpe his heirs and assigns inperpetuity. This was ten days before their marriage.
According to Milton Ormerod in The Ormerods, she was obviouslybesotted with him and the transaction was, in any case, illegal.
A coheiress was not the outright owner of the land but only a lifetenant. The land had to go to her eldest son, George, if he survived,or her next eldest son by her first marriage if he did not.
However Richard and Elizabeth did succeed in selling all theGambleside land for £202 according to the Court Roll for Easter 1687.
Elizabeth could well have argued that she needed the money to bring upher growing family.
Peter, her first husband had still got four vigorous brothers tocontend such an action and it is inconceivable that they wouldcountenance it without a watertight guarantee that some of theproceeds of the sale would go to Elizabeth's eldest son, George, therightful heir to the property.

Lawrence Ormerod

Baptised on 17 December 1673.
Probably died young.

Peter, Lawrence's father, made over his house in Newchurch to Lawrence(7L3), but he failed to appear in court to claim it.
In the Court Roll for October 1685 it is stated that in September 1680Peter Ormerod of Newchurch had surrendered a messuage or dwellinghouse in Newchurch to Lawrence, his second son, and that the saidLawrence for three courts had been unwilling to receive admission sothat the said premises remain in the hands of the lord of the manorand the aforesaid Lawrence is in the mercy of the court.

of Dunmow

Mary Ormerod

Baptised on 4 May 1711.

No issue.

Richard Ormerod

of Heyslacks

Richard inherited his father's land at Slack in Wolfenden, andHeyslacks was probably part of it.
The 1849 six inch Ordnance Survey map shows two farms: Higher andLower Slack.
One was probably Lawrence's house and the other erected for Richard inhis father's lifetime, since there is no transfer to Richard at hisfather's death.

Richard sold the land at Wolfenden in 1698 and either he or Lawrence, his son, then went to live in Bury parish.

Buried on 12 October 1707.

Ann ?

Buried on 7 May 1685, according to Milton Ormerod.
This would appear to be wrong according to the parish records.

Richard Ormerod

possibly of Edgeside & Newchurch

Possibly a weaver.

John Ormerod

of Lumb in Wolfenden

The two children mentioned in Oliver (5W1) Ormerod's will are John, who succeeded to the estate, and George 'if he is alive'.
George was alive when his father died, but was buried in 1659.

Buried on 12 March 1700/01.

Susan ?

Susan's name appears in the Court Rolls as John's wife, but there isno record of their marriage.

Peter Ormerod

of Lumb

Baptised on 8 April 1657.
Buried on 2 January 1660/61.

George Ormerod

Baptised on 24 August 1663.

Peter Ormerod

Baptised on 24 December 1665.
Buried on 8 March 1708.

Possibly Peter 'of Lome'.

There is one clue in the final arrangement of his brother Oliver'sestate in the Court Rolls indicating that Peter may have had a son,Thomas.

Oliver Ormerod

of Lumb

Baptised on 16 June 1661.

Oliver was the senior great-grandson and heir of George (4W1) ofWolfenden and Margaret Ormerod his wife.
At his death Oliver owned the original family land at Wolfenden withmore land at Shawclough, and was probably the richest Ormerod inRossendale.
He also had a substantial estate in Deadwenclough of yearly rent 16/3dand land in other areas such as Pendle.

Both Oliver's sons died young, but he allied his two survivingdaughters to the two wealthiest Ormerods he could find.

Buried on 28 May 1731.

Alice ?

Buried on 6 November 1693.

Abraham Lock

of Manchester

Alice Ormerod

Baptised on 14 December 1645.

Robert Kay

of Bury

Possibly the same Robert Kay of Bury who married Elizabeth Ormerod,Mary's elder sister, in June 1673.

Mary Ormerod

Baptised on 25 July 1650.

John Ormerod

Gentleman of Tunstead

The last of the line, and the only surviving son of Richard (6L2).

Baptised on 26 March 1682.

His father made over the Tunstead land to John in 1710, following hismarriage to Mary Ormerod.
Mary was one of the coheiresses of Oliver (7W1) of Lumb in Wolfenden. This Oliver was the senior great-grandson and heir of George (4W1) ofWolfenden and Margaret Ormerod his wife. As such he was probably therichest Ormerod in Rossendale at this time.

Buried on June 14 1757 at Newchurch.
Will proved in 1757.

In John's will John Hardman, son of his eldest sister, Alice, got 2/-a week and he directed that the estates should be sold and, afterprovision for his wife, the proceeds should be divided among theRamsdens and the Ashworths the children of his sisters, Ann andDorothy.
This flouted the entail set up by his great uncle Oliver (5L1), as didthe actions of John's father's cousin, Richard (6L1) of Cowclough.

The executors of John's will were his second wife, Mary, and PeterOrmerod (10O1) of Ormerod, the nephew of his first wife.
They sold the Tunstead estate by auction in three lots for £2,500 butthe purchasers withheld the purchase money pending the case brought byPeter Ormerod of Tottington (the would-be heir according to theentail).

The Tunstead estate was probably centred on what is now known asNewbarn Farm, Stacksteads. In the barn of that farm there is still acoping stone with the inscription 'I.O. 1739'. This was recorded byJohn B. Taylor (1988). The 'I.O.' is 'John Ormerod' and the datecoincides with the ownership of John from 1732 to 1757.

Mary Ormerod

Buried on 10 August 1716, ten days before her third infant daughter.

Alice Ormerod

Baptised on 13 May 1713.

Ann Ormerod

Buried on 20 August 1716 - ten days after her mother.

Alice Ormerod

Baptised on 22 April 1675.
