George Ormerod

of Cowpe

Baptised in 1625.
Buried on 12 June 1669.
Will proved in 1670.

George's will was very similar to his father's, He also made hisbrother, John (6W2) as his feoffee. The Cowpe lands went to his eldestson, Richard, but the estate was charged with the payment of £10 toeach of the other children, as they attained the age of 21.
It also had to support, not only their mother, Jane, but also theirgrandmother, Elizabeth, who did not die until January 1681/82.

Lawrence Ormerod

of Ormerod

By Oliver (7W1)'s will Lawrence and his wife, Alice, inherited a lotof land in Rossendale which eventually passed to their son and heir,Peter (10O1).


Alice Ormerod

of Tunstead

Whitaker failed to identify Oliver Ormerod (7W1) of Lumb in Rossendaleas the father of the wife of Lawrence (9O1) of Ormerod and got hername wrong - she was actually called Alice.

Peter Ormerod

of Deadwenclough

In his father's will Peter received £120, payable by his elderbrother, Oliver, out of the residue of the estate.

In 1637 Peter's brother, Oliver, sold him land in Wolfenden of yearlyrent 5/- for £30.
No sale or transfer of this land has been found.

In 1661/62 Peter Ormerod, Alice his wife and Margaret his onlydaughter are recorded as paying tax in Deadwenclough.

No possible burial of Peter arises until the 'Peter Ormerod of Lome'(near Whitewellbottom) buried in 1708, by which time he would havebeen nearly 100.

In 1667 was buried 'Alice wife of Peter Ormerod of Bottom' - probablyan abbreviation for Whitewellbottom in Wolfenden.

In 1661/62 Peter Ormerod, Alice his wife and Margaret his onlydaughter are recorded as paying tax in Deadwenclough.

The two children mentioned in Oliver (5W1) Ormerod's will are John,who succeeded to the estate, and George 'if he is alive'.
George was alive when his father died, but was buried in 1659.

Jane Hardman

Baptised on 28 January 1682.


William Ormerod

William was a prosperous clothier, with interests in Yorkshire.

Baptised in Burnley on 13 July 1571.

William started life as a second son with a life tenancy only of thedower land at Gambleside of yearly rent 7/-.

In the Court Roll for 1589 it is reported that feoffees thensurrendered land in Gambleside and Wolfenden of yearly rent 42/- toJohn (6G1) son and heir of Peter Ormerod deceased and that then Johnsurrendered land of yearly rent 7/-, now in the occupation of AnnOrmerod widow, to William, brother of the said John for life, payingthe Queen's rent of 7/- per annum and 7/- per annum to John.

By the time William died he was advancing substantial sums of £75 and£80 on mortgage, to, for instance, the Lord family in Bacop.

When William's death was reported in 1629 it was stated that his heirwas Peter aged 18 and that Lawrence Yate of Huncoat was his guardian"according to the custom of the manor".

Will proved in York in 1629.


Oliver Ormerod

of Wolfenden

In his father's will Oliver obtained the ancestral land in Wolfenden.

In 1629, two years after his father's death, Oliver surrendered thisland, of yearly rent 6/2d to Peter Ormerod, son and heir of WilliamOrmerod late of Wolfenden deceased, as a feoffee for the entailment ofhalf of this land on the issue of a proposed marriage between Oliverand Ann, daughter of the said William.
The other half of the estate remained in the tenure of Oliver'swidowed mother, Margaret, for life.

Buried in September 1658.
Will proved in 1663.


George Ormerod

There is an obscurely dated entry in the Bishops' Transcripts forcirca 1630 for the baptism of a George son of Oliver, which may bethis George, or the son of Oliver (5L1).
