The Ormerods of Gambleside

Notes

Henry Ormerod

of Wolfenden (and later of Habergham Eaves?)

In his father's will Henry received £120, payable by his elderbrother, Oliver, out of the residue of the estate.

Apart from his father's will, Henry is first mentioned as the feoffeeof the Cowpe land of their brother, Richard, in 1633.

In 1639 Margaret Ormerod, the mother of Henry, bequeathed 6/8d to'Margaret Ormerod, the wife of Henry Ormerod of Edge' but does not sayHenry is her son.
This bequest could just have been to a namesake of hers.

Henry is mentioned as 'of Cowpe' in 1645, probably whilst he wasmanaging that land for his nephew, the young George, Richard's heir.

In 1642 Henry advanced £140 on land in Wolfenden to Robert Ashworth.
This would have been mostly using the £120 legacy from his father'swill.
Robert Ashworth was probably the father of Elizabeth, Richard's widow.

In 1652 the Court Roll reported that Henry Ormerod, late ofWhitewellbottom (in Wolfenden) but now of Habergham Eaves andElizabeth his wife mortgaged their land in Wolfendenbooth of yearlyrent 4d. to James Sagar for £20.

In 1672 the Court Roll reported that Henry Ormerod of Smallshaw inBurnley has sold this land outright.

The will of Henry Ormerod of Habergham Eaves, dated 4 May 1684, withan inventory made on 26 June 1684, which mentions his son Oliver, hisdaughter Margaret, wife of John Kay, his daughter, Elizabeth Eastwoodand his granddaughter Ann Ormerod, who he appoints his executor.
Also Henry appointed Robert Dearden of Hudhey in Haslingden guardianof the said Ann.

This appears to be the right Henry until we find that Henry Ormerod ofWolfenden was buried on 5 September 1674.
The Henry of Habergham Eaves may not be Henry (5W1) at all, butpossibly one of the Ormerods of Crawshawbooth - the descendents ofOliver (3Cb1) who intermarried with the Deardens of Hudhey.

Died in 1674 or 1684.
