The Ormerods of Gambleside

Notes

Richard Ormerod

of Lench

About 17 years old at the time of his father's death.
At this time Richard moved to land at Lench, while George remained atWolfenden.

Richard inherited most of his father's land - in Lench, Rawtenstall,Cowhouses and Wolfendenbooth, besides some in Cowpe which was inaddition to the land his father bought for his brother, George.
The holding at Lench was the largest, of yearly rent 21/8d, and it wasthere that Richard chose to live, leaving the family home at Wolfendento his brother, George.

It is believed that both brothers married soon after their father'sdeath circa 1580, as their eldest sons, both Olivers, were being madetrustees, a role for which young men were usually chosen, by 1604.

Richard appears from time to time in the Court Rolls, mainly inconnection with his sons' affairs.

He made his will in January 1637/8, having seen four of his sons diebefore him.
Richard's cattle, sheep, crops, goods and debts amounted to £154 andhe left them to his wife, his two younger surviving sons, John andLawrence and his daughter, Alice. He had more than the usual number ofsheep - about 50 if their value was 3/4d apiece - and it appears thathe may have been involved in the wool and cloth trade.
He had provided for his eldest son, Oliver, by conveying lands to himin the Halmot Court.

In an entry in the Court Roll of 1640 regarding some of his affairsafter Richard de Lenches comes "ut etiam ... civitate Londini".
This implies some sort of business link with the capital.

One of Richard's last acts in the Court Rolls was to surrender land inCowpe of yearly rent 12/2d to his son John.
He may also have purchased the estate at Bentley Clough for John.

Richard was buried in April 1638.
His will was proved in 1639.

Elizabeth Ormerod

In her will of 1603 Ellen Ormerod mentions Elizabeth Ormerod the wifeof Richard and Margaret Ormerod the wife of George Ormerod.
By the way she refers to other wives by their maiden names in thetraditional Rossendale fashion, it would appear that both Elizabethand Margaret were Ormerods by birth.
According to Milton Ormerod in The Ormerods they were probably thedaughters of John (5J1) of Littlehouse in Gambleside.

Elizabeth died at Slack in 1640.
Her will was proved in London in 1657.
This will was made in 1640 when she appears to have been living inWolfenden with her youngest son, Lawrence.

George Ormerod

Died young?

Peter Ormerod

Buried in 1626.
Death noted in the Bishops' Transcripts.

Richard Ormerod

Buried in July 1633.
Death noted in the Bishops' Transcripts.

Oliver Ormerod

Oliver appears to have had land outside Rossendale, e.g. in Chorley.
He purchased 90 Lancashire acres of good land in Tunstead from oneGilbert Kershaw, a clothier from Wakefield, who had held the land inTunstead since the disafforestation.
The land was purchased for £450 - a vast sum for a Rossendale man ofthe time, and a purchase made without apparently having to sell anyother land.
Following this purchase Oliver is thereafter described as "ofTunstead".

Buried on 19 August 1633.
His will was proved in the same year.
In his will he surrendered his estate to feoffees Nicholas Cuncliffeof Wycoller, gent. and George Hargreaves of Goodshaw to be seized tothe use of his son, Richard, providing he paid unto each of hissisters £120 as the accomplish the age of 24 years.
If Richard died without heirs lawfully begotten, the feoffees standfined and seized successively to the use of Oliver's brothers, John,Richard and Lawrence or their lawful heirs, provided they honour thelegacies to Oliver's daughters.

Mary Nuttall

Widow of ? Piccop and daughter of J. Nuttall.

Lawrence Ormerod

of Slack in Wolfenden.

It appears that Elizabeth, Lawrence's mother, came to live with him inWolfenden following her husband's death in 1638.
Elizabeth left £10 apiece to Lawrence's children, Richard, John,George, Oliver and Mary, with the proviso that their father shouldhave use of the money until they each came of age.

In May 1633 Lawrence's brother, Oliver, by then close to death, soldto him for £80 the land in Wolfenden, of yearly rent 2/10d, on whichLawrence spent the rest of his life.
In 1641 he leased more land, of yearly rent 3/2d, for 18 years, paying£7-5-4d per annum rent.

In the taxation list for 1660 for paying off the disbanded forces hewas assessed at £8, which makes him comfortably off, but not rich, andit showed that he had a manservant.

In 1667 Lawrence appointed trustees to his will.
He appointed new trustees to his will prior to 1684, but no copy ofthis will survives.

Buried on 10 April 1684.

Mary Hargreaves?

Buried on 15 July 1685.

Mary was probably one of the Hargreaves of Hargreaves Fold, whose landadjoined Slack, where Lawrence Ormerod lived, since Lawrence andMary's youngest child, Ann - who died unmarried, made a member of theHargreaves family her executor.
It is fairly certain - from the name of Lawrence and Mary's secondson, and the later repetition of the name after this son died, thatMary's father was called John.

One of Richard Ormerod's last acts in the Court Rolls was to surrenderland in Cowpe of yearly rent 12/2d to his son John.
He may also have purchased the estate at Bentley Clough for John.

In May 1640 John surrendered his Cowpe land to his brother, Lawrence, and John Halstead of "Rowley" as feoffees for this land to stand asdower for Mary, his second wife.
