George Ormerod

of Gambleside

From the survey of Blackburnshire in 1507: "Item, there is anothervachery in Rossendal called Gamelsund [Gambleside] laten [let] inferme [rent] at 44/2d p.a., now to be holden in likewise to OliverOrmerod and George Ormerod for £4 p.a."

Court roll for 14 October 1507; "George, Oliver and Elizabeth Ormerod,widow of Peter Ormerod, complain against John Pilling in a plea ofdebt, 2/-".
The court is the Halmot Court of the Manor of Accrington according toMilton Ormerod (The Ormerods, pp50-51). Elizabeth and her eldest son,John, were of Ormerod, and not therefore tenants of land within theManor of Accrington. They needed George and Oliver to sue on theirbehalf.


Alice Barens

In The Act Book of Whalley Abbey it is recorded that on 14 November1516, Alice, widow and executrix of George Ormerod, was summoned toappear to respond to Richard Barens, executor of the will of hisfather William Barens.
Alice Ormerod claimed she was infirm and unable to attend. (TheOrmerods, p.51)

The actual entry from the Act Book, in the original Latin, reads:

"Curia tenta in Ecclesia parochiali de Whalley, xiiijmo die mensisNouembris Anno Domini Millesimo quingentisimo xvjmo coram Commissarioprelibato.

Ad diem et locum predictos citata fuit Alicia Ormerode, Relicta etexecutrix Georgij Ormerode, jurisdiccionis nostre predicte adrespondendum Ricardo Barens, Executori Willelmi Barens patris sui, inquadam causa testamentaria siue impeticione vltime voluntatis predictiWillelmi. Que dictis loco et die euocata non comparuit; sed WillelmusByrtwysyll comparuit nomine predicte Alicie tanquam excusator ipsiusallegans ipsam adeo infirmam esse quod non potest legitime venire, etsuper hoc prestitit corporale juramentum. "Ellen Ormerod - born 1860
She was only 3 years old when her mother died (10 months old in the1861 Census).
1871 Census: Living with William & Martha Dent as a Border.
1881 Census: Living with William Dent, her uncle, aged 19 years, atExtwistle Mill Cottage - together with Esther Ormerod and JosephOrmerod.
1891 Census: Unmarried. with her son Herbert Ormerod and her nephewJoseph Ormerod, living at 81 Halifax Road, Briercliffe.
1901 Census: Married to George S. Stanworth, with her son, HerbertOrmerod, living at 71 Halifax Road, Briercliffe.

Ellen Ormerod (Stanworth)

Herbert Ormerod b. 1888
Ellen married George S. Stanworth between 1891 and 1901.
No other children shown in the 1901 Census."

Jane Ormerod

Living at 11 Claremont Street, Lt Marsden, Nelson, at the time of the1881 Census.

From notes made by Malcolm Ormerod:
"Jane Ormerod, b. abt 1876 at Extwistle. She married Herman Catterall,a cotton manufacturer, and lived in Napier Street, Nelson; moving inthe 1920s to Ansdell, Lytham St Annes.
She died about 1950 and Herman died in the 1930s.
They had two children: Thomas Ormerod Catterall, b. abt 1912, whocarried on his father's manufacturing business and lived at The Limes,Higherford, Nr Nelson; and Phyllis Catterall who married and lived inthe Lytham St Annes area."


Thomas Ormerod

From notes made by Malcolm Ormerod:
"Thomas Ormerod, b. 17 April 1886 at Claremont Street, Nelson.
He married Ruth Harrison at York in 1915, and served in the WestYorkshire Regiment as a P.T. instructor, being commissioned as aSecond Lieutenant.
He resumed his teaching career in Northwich, Cheshire, and died on 12July 1962 His wife died on 29 October 1966. Both died at Northwich.
Thomas and Ruth had two daughters. Olive married ? Humphries and had ason, Andrew Humphries, who married Ann and had two daughters: Claire &Liza. Thomas and Ruth's second daughter was Moyra Ormerod. Bothdaughters trained as teachers."
