Thiepval Memorial

The Thiepval Memorial commemorates those who were killed on the Somme battlefields and have no known grave.

The colossal arched memorial was designed by Edward Lutyens and is built of brick with stone facing. The immense central archway is flanked by smaller arches resting on 16 main pillars.

On the panels of stone are recorded the names of 73,412 men who died in the region in 1916-17.

The memorial is built on the site of a German fortress extending both above and below ground, which was not taken by the Allies until 28 September 1916.
