Atherton Cemetery

 

Atherton Cemetery  is situated off Leigh Road, Atherton, and the main entrance stands opposite Atherton Cenotaph.

The Cemetery contains 57 Commonwealth War Graves, scattered throughout the cemetery, including the grave of Harold Ormrod, who served during the First World War with the Guards Machine Gun Regiment.

Memorial inscriptions within the Cemetery also make reference to Doctor Young Ormerod and Willie Ormerod, who both died during the First World War and are buried in the vicinity of Ypres, Belgium.

The Cemetery also includes a memorial to Edward Ormerod, inventor of the Detaching Hook, a safety device for use in mines, which saved the lives of many miners.
