St Dunawd Church
Bangor Is-coed, Flintshire
Bangor lies in Maelor Saesneg, which is the detached part of Flintshire. The village is variously referred to as Bangor Is-coed, Bangor-on-Dee or Bangor Monachorum ('Bangor of the monks').
The village was the site of a large monastery, which was established in A.D. 560 by St Dunawd, the first abbot. No trace of the monastery remains, and some suggest that it may have been sited in an area lying beneath the current course of the River Dee.
St Dunawd Church is situated next to bridge over the River Dee, which connects Flintshire and Denbighshire.
The Ormrods of Pickhill Hall had strong connections with the church, and Oliver Ormrod was a churchwarden there for 41 years.
Tablets within the church commemorate the three sons of Oliver Ormrod, who died during the First World War, and Oliver Ogle Ormrod, who was killed fighting in defence of Malta during the Second World War.
