Bruce Ormerod fought with the 1st Battlion, Hertfordshire Regiment, during the First World War, first landing in France on 6 November 1914, where the battalion came under the command of 4th (Guards) Brigade in 2nd Division.

He was invalided out of the Army in October 1916, at which time 1st Battalion, Hertfordshire Regiment, were fighting on the Somme as part of 118th Brigade in 39th Division.

Bruce's younger brother, George Ellis Ormerod, fought with the King's Royal Rifle Corps in the Second World War, and died whilst a prisoner of war in Germany.
