The Soldiers Died in the Great War Database records that Charles was born and resided in Whaley Bridge, Derbyshire. The Database also records that he enlisted in the Army in Buxton, Derbyshire.
Charles died of wounds on 5 November 1917, and is buried in Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery, Souchez, France (Grave Ref VI. H. 1).

Charles was listed as missing following the raid, and was later discovered to have died of wounds sustained, and to have been buried by the Germans in Thumeries Communal Cemetery. He was subsequently buried in Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery, Souchez, France.
At the time of his death 1st/6th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters, were fighting as part of 139th (Forester) Brigade, 46th (North Midland) Division.
The First World War Medal Rolls show that Charles served as Private 4499 and 241542 with the Notts & Derby Regiment. He was entitled to the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
