Eric Ormerod was a Station Overseer from Buthawah Station, Urana, New South Wales, one of the sons of Charlotte Mary Ormerod, of 4 Canterbury Road, Toorak, Melbourne, Victoria.

Eric enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 6 September 1915, aged 26. His brother, George Booth Ormerod, had been killed in action on Walker's Ridge at Gallipoli shortly before this, on 7 August 1915, and another brother, Egbert Quarterman Ormerod, also served with the Australian Forces during the First World War.

Eric embarked from Brisbane, Queensland, on board H.M.A.T. A62 Wandilla on 31 January 1916, as part of the 26th Battalion, 9th Reinforcement.

Eric returned to Australia on 13 February 1917.
