The Soldiers Died in the Great War Database records that Ernest was born in Batley and enlisted in the Army in Dewsbury.
Ernest was killed in action on 17 June 1916, and is buried in Vlamertinghe Military Cemetery, Belgium (Grave Ref. I. B. 6).
Between 2 June and 13 June 1916 the 7th (Service) Battalion, King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, had been involved in the Battle of Mount Sorel, including the successful recapture of that height alongside the Canadians on 13 June 1916.
At this time the Battalion formed part of 61st Brigade, 20th (Light) Division.
Ernest's uncle, Doctor Young Ormerod, was killed fighting with Canadian forces in 1916, and is buried on the other side of Ypres at Sanctuary Wood Cemetery.
