William died on 19 April 1916, and his name is commemorated on Panel 19 of the Basra Memorial in present-day Iraq. He has no known grave.

6th Battalion, East Lancashire Regiment was part 38th Brigade, 13th (Western) Division, and on 19 April 1916 the Battalion was involved in the attack on Bait Aisa - part of the unsuccessful attempt to relieve Kut al Amara.

The Soldiers Died in the Great War Database records that William was born in Brierfield and resided in Burnley. He enlisted in the Army in Nelson, and was killed in action on 19 April 1916 during the Mesopotamian Campaign.

The British Army WWI Medal Rolls Index Card for William records that he entered the Mesopotamian theatre of the war on 23 Novermber 1915.

The Army Register of Soldier's Effects records that William was presumed dead on 6 April 1916 in Mesopotamia. His effects - amounting to £4 16s. 3d. - was left to his sister, Mary.
